Our emotions can destroy us.
1. Jealousy makes us angry.
Judah said to his brothers, “What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his
blood? Come, let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all,
he is our brother, our own flesh and blood.” His brothers agreed.
Genesis 37:26-27
2. Shame causes so much brokenness:
All his sons and daughters came to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. “No,” he said, “I will continue to mourn until I join my son in the grave.”
Genesis 37:35
A.) Distancing and Cut-Off.
At that time, Judah left his brothers and went down to stay with a man of
Adullam named Hirah.
Genesis 38:1
B.) Resentment and Revenge.
There Judah met the daughter of a Canaanite man named Shua. He married her and
made love to her;
Genesis 38:2
C.) Blame Shifting.
Judah then said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “Live as a widow in your father’s
household until my son Shelah grows up.” For he thought, “He may die too, just like his brothers.”
Genesis 38:11
3. Lust dehumanizes people.
Not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her by the roadside and said, “Come now, let me sleep with you.”
Genesis 38:16
Self-Reflection with God sets us free.
Judah recognized them and said, “She is more righteous than I, since I wouldn’t give
her to my son Shelah.”
