God’s Vision for Marriage and Singleness

God’s vision for us is countercultural.

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and please to God – this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Romans 12:1-2

A. In marriage.

“Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh?’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

Matthew 19:4-6

B. In singleness.

For there are eunuchs who were born that way, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others – and those who choose to live like eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it.

His vision is a sign of the future kingdom.

“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This is a profound mystery – but I am talking about Christ and the church.
