“Sticks and Stones”
November 3rd – 6th, 2016
John Elmer, Lead Pastor
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
“Rock of Encouragement”
- Encouragement gives us life.
“The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit.”
“Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.”
“The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”
- God wants to encourage us.
“May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had . . .”
The lips of the righteous nourish many . . .
How to be a Good Encourager
- Compliment people for who they are.
“There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.”
1 Corinthians 12:4-6
- Applaud them for what they have done.
“So then, welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor people like him . . .”
- Encourage people with God’s truth.
“He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine . . .”
- Do it daily.
“But encourage one another daily . . .”
Action Step: I will say something encouraging to everyone I speak with this week.
